Expressing her hopes, fears and love for special ecosystems with her paintbrush, Lin Barrie believes that the abstract essence of a landscape, person or animal can only truly be captured by direct observation. She immerses herself in her subjects, whether it is a night sky, sketching rhinos drinking at a favourite waterhole, watching African wild dogs and their pups, or capturing the mood of an African dawn.

Donna Solovei is a little thing. But her work – illustration-based creations adapted to suit different mediums, is pretty big. Hers is a playful, intricate world bursting with life while remaining delicate in its expression. Donna’s most recent obsession has been the merging and melding of animals – an imaginative world of might be’s and could’ve beens where two become one. There is a certain kind of sensitivity to aesthetics in Donna’s work; she employs natural lines, influenced by the textures and shapes of the world around us, to depict her characters. Creating awareness in her own way, Donna’s love for animals is depicted in her drawings. Even as more animal species become endangered, Donna goes beyond the expected to create impossible new breeds on paper – Hycupines and Pythopards roam free in the jungles of this artist’s mind. Wide-eyed in wonder, she puts up on the walls, the things that don’t exist but that she pines to see come to life in the world.

Donna Solovei. Born in South Africa, 1981. Studied at both Chelsea and Camberwell College of Art, London. Exhibited locally and internationally with a range of works varying from Illustration, printmaking, textiles and product. Now living in Cape Town.

This body of work has been produced to evoke emotion and thought. Donna’s work has become a synchronicity of impressions from nature. Water, air, light, and the movement of these elements established a flow for the production of these pieces. It encompasses a broad palette derived from the library of nature. Donna has used many layers of almost transparent ink, and nuances of tone to create a suggestion and reveal a slightness of the delicate and fragile nature of our world.

It’s her translation of textures and color depicted from Cape Town’s environment that we observe and begin to feel through her painting and printmaking.

Nicki Ellis is the dynamic and creative force behind the proudly local bespoke homeware and décor studio, Love Milo that specialises in ceramic, wooden, glass and textile products. While completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in motion picture at AFDA, specialising in cinematography and visual design, Nicki started her career as a freelance photographer in 2002, working on various fashion brands, stores and product launches. After having her photography work featured in various galleries around Cape Town, Nicki trained under David Grant as a telecine grader. She was then hired as a full-time grader for television commercials, feature films and music videos at Condor Post Productions, which later became Waterfront Studios. There, she spent 5 years honing her craft and nurturing her eye for colour composition, working with notable brands such as BMW, Woolworths, Nestle, Coke and Vodacom.

In 2010 Nicki found out that she was pregnant with her son, Milo. This exciting news motived Nicki to create for herself and to begin on a journey her son could be inspired by, so she took the leap and started her own homeware and design brand Love Milo. Nicki’s exceptional and unique eye for detail and passion for beautiful design is reflected in the rapid success of the business: within 2 years the brand grew massively from a start up to supplying décor items to wholesale to both national and global retailers, working with retailers on custom designed products as well as operating a highly successful online consumer business.
